Duffey Lake Backcountry Touring

The Duffey Lake backcountry ski touring areas offer some of the best road access backcountry ski touring & Ski Mountaineering Adventures in the Coast Range! This premier backcountry zone has amazing terrain, great snow and a wide variety of fairly easy to access ski areas. We offer a wide range of single and multi-day guided backcountry ski trips into the area from custom adventures to a scheduled weekly outing. It's also one of our go-to areas for teaching AST w2 courses because of the wide range of easy to access terrain that's available.

Location & Access:

Duffey Lake Backcountry zone is located just east of Pemberton, a short drive north of Whistler. The various ski areas in the Duffey lake zone are all accessed right off the side of highway 99. No need for a 4x4 or snowmobile!

Popular Tours:

The Duffey Lake Backcountry area has really gained in popularity in the last couple of years due to the easy access and great snow. However, our guides know how to find some great pow stashes that are a little off the beaten path or you can choose an ultra-classic route like:

  • Mt. Rohr
  • Marriott Basin
  • Cayoosh
  • Saxifrage
  • Mt. Joffre

Who’s this trip for:

From beginner to advanced skiers and split boarders we can find the terrain and trip to match. A reasonably level of fitness is needed but no backcountry or avalanche experience necessary. Let us show you the secret backcountry power stashes and amazing big mountain lines that only the locals know about!

How does it work:

There are two ways to sign up for one of our Duffy Lake backcountry trips.

  1. Regular Trips: Just sign up for one of the trips we run every second weekend and and meet some new friends
  2. Private Trip: Let us know what you're looking for and we'll put a custom trip together for you and your ski buddies.

Heli-Access:

There are a number of amazing ski areas in the Duffy that are just too far to get to in a reasonable day. That's where the heli-access option really shines. We catch a helicopter lift up in the am and start skiing in zones very seldom visited. Then, after we've had a few amazing laps, we ski down to a car that we've staged on the Duffey Lake road. This option is only available on private trips.

Waiver & Risk Management:

As you know, outdoor activities involve numerous hazards including, but not limited to, avalanches, crevasses, rockfall, slips and falls, equipment failure, poor weather, etc. And while we do our best to anticipate and mitigate these hazards we cannot completely eliminate them. So, as with anything fun, you will be required to sign our Participant Release to take part in one of our courses or trips.

Custom Dates Available

Just let us know what dates will work for you and we will put together a custom package.

Fine Print:

  • 7:30am: meet in Pemberton to sign waivers and get organized
  • 7:45am: Drive up the highway to the Duffey Area
  • 4:30pm: Back in Pemberton for a burger and beer

This general itinerary may change slightly depending on the group and the specific area we’re going to. You will get a confirmation email with all the logistics from your guide.
