Types: Rock Climbing, Summer
Our Powell Rivered based intro to climbing course focuses on introducing people to rock climbing outdoors and teaching the skills needed to get into the sport.
Powell River Intro to Rock Climbing
Powell River is home to a great variety of easy-to-access and fun rock climbing crags, making it a great place to learn the skills to safely climb. So if you've in Powell River and have ever been interested in this amazing sport, this is a great time to try it out. Our Intro to Rock Climbing course includes everything you need from harnesses & helmets to ropes & anchors along with an ACMG-certified instructor.
This half-day course is designed to introduce you to outdoor rock climbing while providing some of the knowledge to get started safely. We will review equipment, discussing the ins and outs of quick-draws, trad-draws, ropes & rope bags, anchor kits, etc. and spend a little time going over gear maintenance, racking and some handling tricks that will make you look like a pro. Finally, we will get on the rock and practice the hard skills needed to safely climb outdoors: belaying, anchor building, setting up a top rope, cleaning a top rope, etc.
The climbing areas in and around Powell River include:
- Haslam Lake Bluffs - A number of excellent easy to moderate climbs in a lovely setting with just a 20-minute approach after a 20-25 minute drive on an FSR. There is also a via ferrata set-up as a more fun approach to the actual climbing directly up a rock slab. https://maps.app.goo.gl/z4nQgaDJAwX3u1aJ8
- Lois Lake Bluffs - A number of excellent moderate crack climbs and some face features on excellent granite and a good spot for learning how to rappel. An easy 5 minute approach, 10 minute drive on an FSR. - https://maps.app.goo.gl/WtZr8XuE5Sks6Mzy7
- High Five - One of our favourite spots with some high quality moderate to more difficult climbs but also some recently developed into climbing as well. A lovely spot just a 15 minute drive on an FSR follwed by a 5 minute approach. - https://maps.app.goo.gl/8kPaxVZQYT9sGoFd8
