Tantalus Alpine Climbing
This is a self-guided, heli-access trip into the amazing Tantalus Alpine Climbing area around the Haberl Hut.
Using the picturesque Haberl Hut in the heart of the Tantalus Range as a base of operations this helicopter accessed alpine climbing trip has it all: Granite spires, long ridges, beautiful glaciers, ocean views, cell service and a BBQ. The staging area is located just 45min from Vancouver in the beautiful town of Squamish, BC. Because of hut restrictions we only run this trip a few times a year using the hut, however, we can accommodate custom dates if you don't mind camping. Our typical 4-day, 3-night trips typically run from Friday to Monday and include the hut booking, helicopter flights up to the hut and back as well as route and gear beta from local guides. We also have rental equipment available and optional food packages if you don't want to shop. This allows you get in 4 days of alpine climbing and mountaineering while only missing a minimum of work! The Area:
The hut is located high in the alpine at the col between the mountain peaks of Dione & Serratus. Just northwest of Squamish, the area is accessed by helicopter making it easy to bring some good food and wine and leave the boil-in-a-bag meals at home. At 6,600′ (2,000m) above sea level the hut is surrounded by glaciers and rock. Basically put on a harness and start the adventure at the door.
Mountaineering & Alpine Climbing:
The terrain in the Tantalus area is ideal for alpine climbing and mountaineering. There is a wide variety of mixed snow and rock routes of various grades on peaks such as:
- Tantalus Traverse – 5.6
- SE Face of Dione – 4th Class
- SW Buttress of Dione – 5.10-
- Wee Dione Ridge – 5.9
- East Ridge of Alpha – 5.7
- NW Buttress of Alpha – 4th Class
- West Face of Serratus – 4th Class
- North Face of Serratus – Snow & Ice
- Red Tusk – 5.6
Trip Options:
The hut-based trips are set however we can offer a variety of trip length options and any dates if you're open to camping. The camping trips are also less expensive as we depending on how long you would like to spend in this alpine paradise and what the objectives are however our standard offering is 3 days. Our trips include up to 0.2 hours of helicopter time in a Bell 206 which covers the flight into the Haberl Hut area on the first day and then back out again on the last day and, for the 3-day trips, a bump from the Haberl Hut area to the start of the Tantalus Traverse.

Waiver & Risk Management:
As you know, outdoor activities involve numerous hazards including, but not limited to, avalanches, crevasses, rockfall, slips and falls, equipment failure, poor weather, etc. And while we do our best to anticipate and mitigate these hazards we cannot completely eliminate them. So, as with anything fun, you will be required to sign our Participant Release to take part in one of our courses or trips.
Sample 2-Day Itinerary:
Day 1 – Tantalus Traverse
- 7:30am: Meet at the Staging Area
- 8:30am: Helicopter ride into the hut/camping area to drop gear then onto Tantalus
- 9:00am: Traverse over Tantalus and down to the hut/camping area
- 6:00pm: Arrive back at the hut/camping area for dinner
Day 2 – Departure Day
- 5:30am: Breakfast
- 6:30am: Head out the door for close summit like Serratus
- 1:00pm: Back at the hut/camping area
- 2:30pm: Fly back to the airport

Day1 – Arrival Day:
- 3:30pm: Meet at the Staging Area
- 4:30pm: Helicopter ride into the Hut
- 5:00pm: Alpine skills refresher course near the hut
- 7:00pm: Back at the hut for dinner
Day 2 – Summit Day:
- 5:30am: Breakfast
- 6:30am: Head out the door for a local peak like Dione
- 3:30pm: Back at the Hut
- 5:00pm: Dinner
Day 3 – Summit Day & Departure Day:
- 5:30am: Breakfast
- 6:30am: Bag another peak like Serratus
- 12:30pm: Back at the Lodge to pack up & get ready for the helicopter
- 2:30pm: Catch our ride back to town for a burger

- 12:30pm: Back at the Lodge to pack up & get ready for the helicopter
- 2:30pm: Catch our ride back to town for a burger
