Skiing in Argentina

This August and September we’re headed back to Patagonia to explore some of the best skiing in Argentina & Chile! So take a break from the dog days of summer and join us in exploring some amazing Patagonia snow, wine, micro-brew and BBQ.

The Zone:

The Bariloche area, in the heart of Argentina’s lake district, is located near the spine of the Andes, not far from the Chile border. This area is also one of Argentina’s and Chile's ski meccas! The area is home to numerous ski resorts including Cerro Catedral, Cerro Bayo, Antillana and much, much more. If you're looking for the best snow and weather in Patagonia then this is the zone!

The Plan:

This year we are offering two different trips, each offering 6 days of skiing but exploring two different areas. Of course we take care of everything for both trips, it's basically the all-inclusive version of a ski trip. Just get to Bariloche and we've got your hotels, huts, transportation and lift tickets all covered. Breakfasts at the hotels are included as are dinners and lunches at the alpine huts. You just have to buy some wine/beer and a few meals in town. So, what are the two trips?

Trip #1: Patagonia Huts

This trip explores the amazing terrain around the famous Fray Hut and the lesser known but simply amazing Jakob Hut. Over the six days of skiing you'll get to explore the steep chutes and granite spires that the area is known for not to mention the Euro style full-service huts that keep the weight in the pack to a minimum. Here's the rough day-to-day breakdown but of course we have more detail available below under the itinerary tab:

  • Day 0: Meet in Bariloche, Check into Hotel
  • Day 1: Ski to Fray hut from Catedral
  • Day 2: Ski Fray hut zone
  • Day 3: Traverse to Jakob hut
  • Day 4 & 5: Ski Jakob hut zone
  • Day 6: Traverse back civilization and a shower
  • Day 7: Catch a flight back to Buenos Aires

Trip 2: Patagonia Powder Highway

This trip follows the east slopes of the Andes north from Bariloche, Argentina to Cerro Bayo before heading west into Chile and the west slopes of the Andes before heading south again in a broad horseshoe. This allows us to hit some amazing mountains and volcanos while exploring what is arguably the best snow that Patagonia has to offer. Here's the rough day-to-day breakdown but again we have more detail available below under the itinerary tab:

  • Day 0: Meet in Bariloche, drive to Cerro Bayo & Check into Hotel
  • Day 1: Ski some slack country from Cerro Bayo
  • Day 2: Backcountry skiing off Cerro Bayo
  • Day 3: Drive to Chili & ski Antillanca Resort
  • Day 4: Explore Volcanos from Antillanca
  • Day 5: Drive to Osorno & ski slack country off the volcano
  • Day 6: Try to summit Osorno Volcano
  • Day 7: Drive Back to Bariloche to Fly Home

Waiver & Risk Management:

As you know, outdoor activities involve numerous hazards including, but not limited to, avalanches, crevasses, rockfall, slips and falls, equipment failure, poor weather, etc. And while we do our best to anticipate and mitigate these hazards we cannot completely eliminate them. So, as with anything fun, you will be required to sign our Participant Release to take part in one of our courses or trips.

Trip 1: Frey & Jakob Hut Trip

Arrival Day: The Skiing in Argentina trip will start in Bariloche after a short flight from Buenos Aires. We’ll pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel. Once you’re settled in there will be time to explore town a little before we get together for dinner.

Day 1: We’ll check out of the hotel after breakfast and head over to the Cerro Catedral Ski Resort. From the top of the Alta Patagonia lift we’ll skin back to the ridge and ski down into the Van Titter Valley and around to the Frey Hut. Once at the hut we can drop our extra gear and have a quick snack before heading out to explore the area a bit. When we’re done skiing for the day it’s back to the hut for some dinner, wine or micro-brewed beer.

Day 2: After breakfast it’s out the door with a light day pack and explore the granite spires and chutes that makes Frey famous. Once our legs are tired it’s back to the hut for some more great food and wine.

Day 3: Time to move on. We will pack our bags and start the traverse over to the Jakob hut with a climb out of the valley above Toncek lake before enjoying a great ski down into the next drainage. From there it we traverse up an open valley slowly gaining elevation until we reach the next ridge with views of the Patagonian Andes. Another ski down and we’re at the hut. This traverse generally takes around 5-7 hours.

Day 4 & 5: We have two days set aside to enjoy the amazing skiing around the Jakob hut, not to mention the amazing food and beverages. Trips can include a skin up to the summit of Cerro Sella and Cerro Constructores which offer some amazing views and an epic ski line back down. Or, if the weather and snow conditions cooperate we can look heading over to the Cuernos del Diablo (the Devil´s Horn), one of the highlights of the area.

Day 6: After a few days enjoying the snow and hospitality of the Jakob Hut it’s time to head back to civilization. The trip will take about 5 hours to tour back to the Cerro Catedral ski area, so long as the weather and snowpack cooperate, and ends with a ski back down to the waiting car and a night at the hotel.

Departure Day:  After breakfast we’ll check out of the hotel and drive you to the airport to catch your flight to Buenos Aires and then on home. Unless you’re sticking around for Trip 2! If you’re staying we can drop you off at Cerro Catedral ski hill for some laps or you can stay at the hotel and relax in the spa.

Trip 2: Patagonia Road Trip

Arrival Day: We’ll pick-up arriving guests at the airport and then drive a little over an hour to our hotel near the Cerro Bayo Ski Boutique (ski resort). Once settled there will be time to explore town a little before we get together for dinner.

Day 1: Ski some of the amazing slack country lines off this surprisingly quiet ski resort, circling back to the lifts when possible to maximize the vert for the day.

Day 2: Back at Cerro Bayo ski resort with the plan to ski tour off the top of the ski lifts and explore the peaks behind the resort for some pristine pow.

Day 3: Up early for a few hours driving across the border to the Chilean side of the Andes and the amazing slopes of Cerro Antillanca. This small resort is built on a set of twin volcanos and is renown for it’s amazing powder skiing. After arriving and getting checked into our hotel we’ll head up skiing for the rest of the day exploring both on hill and some slack country.

Day 4: Time to explore the Antillanca zone! We’ll take the lifts up to get above treeline and then start ski touring. If the weather is cooperating the volcano Casablanca is the destination of choice.

Day 5: We hit the road again, this time heading south to Osorno Ski Resort located on the side of the classic conical volcano Osorno. The rest of the day is spent exploring this new zone, skiing some of the amazing alpine terrain with views of the twin lakes located at the base of the volcano.

Day 6: Now that we’re acclimatized we’ll make a push for the summit of the Osorno Volcano if weather allows. The summit of this 2660m volcano offers 360 degree views of the Andes Mountains including Casablanca where we just were and Tronadore which is located just outside Bariloche.

Day 7: Head back to the Bariloche airport (4.5 hrs +/-) to catch a flight back to Buenos Aires and then on home.
